Description
The Last Judgment gathers a multitude of bodies into a broad, restless field. Figures overlap and swirl through successive layers, their faint chalk outlines creating an impression of movement that continues beyond any single group. Against the brownish paper, the drawing is quieter than a painted fresco, yet its crowded organization retains the force of a vast scene in which the human body carries the drama.
Dated 1570–90 and attributed to the school of Michelangelo, this black-chalk drawing belongs to the continuing response to his monumental imagery. Its attribution identifies a relationship to Michelangelo’s artistic example without making it an autograph work. The numerous figures reward slow viewing, as individual poses emerge from the larger pattern and the composition alternates between tightly packed passages and more open intervals.
