Description
Katsukawa Shunshō presents Ichikawa Danjūrō V in voluminous dark red ceremonial trousers beneath a patterned upper robe. A sword rises diagonally against the costume’s broad mass, while the formal room behind provides a quieter structure. The expansive clothing makes rank and theatrical appearance bodily visible, giving the actor a presence shaped as much by dress as by pose.
The Edo-period print was made in ink and color on paper, with no securely established creation year in the available record. Its subject offers an encounter with theatrical identity through clothing rather than a named character. Shunshō preserves the actor as someone whose appearance is deliberately shaped for an audience. The trousers’ scale gives ordinary bodily movement a ceremonial character, allowing dress to carry much of the portrait’s expressive interest.
