Description
Katsukawa Shunshō portrays Ichikawa Monnosuke II’s disguised komusō role in a pale red and patterned robe. A broad brown woven hat is held in front of the figure rather than concealing the face. A red curtain and stacked stage objects provide the background, making the assumed religious appearance part of a visibly theatrical setting.
Tentatively dated around 1772, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. Shunshō preserves the role’s layered identity in a lasting form, allowing the viewer to consider the difference between outward appearance and the person understood to be hidden within it. The tentative year remains uncertain, but the subject’s central interest is clear: a performer makes visible a character whose own identity is deliberately disguised.
