Description
Nakamura Nakazō I portrays Kudō Suketsune, standing in robes beside an orange fence. The strong horizontal structure gives the upright actor a clear setting, making the figure’s presence feel particular rather than isolated. Katsukawa Shunshō brings a named performer and dramatic character into relation with this simple architectural element, allowing the encounter to remain focused on the portrayal.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print is probably from 1775, during the Edo period. Ink and color on paper give the theatrical encounter a lasting form, inviting attention outside the setting in which the character would unfold over time. Its appeal lies in the meeting of actor and part, where interpretation becomes something a viewer can consider through a single image.
