Description

Katsukawa Shunshō gives Nakamura Nakazō’s Shibaraku role a broad, block-like dark green garment marked by a large white circle. The actor turns sideways and bends, making the costume’s weight and shape part of the action. The contrast between the massive robe and the directed body creates a strong theatrical silhouette, preserving the performer within an emphatic assumed appearance.

Made around 1781, this ink-and-color woodblock print preserves a public performance identity. Shibaraku’s command to stop carries the expectation of a sudden change in action, while Nakazō’s name supplies the individual through whom that moment becomes visible. Shunshō holds that relation in a single printed image. The portrait allows the character’s dramatic presence to persist without requiring the full surrounding play to be reconstructed or uncertain details of its story to be added.
