Description

Sakata Hangorō II and Matsumoto Kōshirō IV face across a simple interior, their turned heads and raised arms suggesting a moment of active exchange. One figure’s striped lower garment contrasts with the other’s more loosely patterned robes. Katsukawa Shunshō links them through the floor and background, letting the two upright panels form a single scene without crowding the actors’ movements.

This Edo-period color woodblock design finds its expressive force in a few carefully chosen differences: a bend of the body, an extended sleeve and the direction of a gaze. The surrounding architecture remains subdued, so costume and gesture carry the encounter. Shunshō gives the performers a poised but animated presence, inviting attention to the way a stage relationship can become readable through the placement of two figures alone.
