Description
Sawamura Sōjūrō III appears beside a smaller companion figure in a composition dominated by long robes and richly patterned fabric. A large sleeve or cloth spreads to the right, giving the close arrangement an expansive accent. Katsukawa Shunshō connects the named actor to the brocade identified in the title, while the second figure makes the encounter a shared scene rather than an isolated portrait.
The color woodblock print belongs to Edo-period Japan and is made in ink and color on paper. A secure production date is not necessary to appreciate the relationship between actor and object. The work’s interest lies in that specific pairing, allowing the viewer to consider the brocade as part of a theatrical presentation without assigning an unsupported role or narrative to the figure.
