Description
In Nakamura Nakazō I as Chinzei Hachirō, Katsukawa Shunshō sets a crouching or striding warrior beneath a gridded stage ceiling. Pale and warm-colored robes flare around the body, and a hand near the head sharpens the gesture. A small prop at the feet adds a concrete detail without explaining the whole action, leaving the performer’s energetic stance as the scene’s center.
Dated to the twelfth month of 1780, the work was printed in ink and color on paper. The precise dramatic identification offers a point of entry without requiring the entire play to be retold. Shunshō preserves a particular performance identity in a lasting form. The portrait’s human interest lies in the connection between a named actor and the character made present through him, a theatrical relationship that the image keeps available after the event itself has passed.
