Description
The Angel Leaving the Family of Tobias turns a domestic gathering into a moment of revelation. In this etching after Rembrandt, the family kneels, clasps hands and looks upward as the angel rises through a burst of light. Baskets, a dog and household objects keep the miraculous event firmly rooted in an intimate, lived-in setting.
The Metropolitan Museum dates this example to 1641. A dense web of lines gives the room depth and shadow, while the angel’s movement is suggested with freer, lighter marks. The figures respond differently—prayer, amazement and outstretched hands—creating a warm range of human feeling. The scene’s appeal lies in that meeting of ordinary family life and extraordinary wonder.
