Description
The Angel with the Key to the Bottomless Pit by Albrecht Dürer fills a broad landscape with the final movements of an apocalyptic vision. An angel stands above a twisting dragon, while a long key and the creature’s coiling body make the encounter immediately distinctive. Beyond them, other figures and a distant city open the image into a larger world.
Made around 1498, the woodcut draws its energy from contrasting directions and scales. The foreground creature’s restless form meets the angel’s more upright presence, while the receding view offers another register of detail. Dürer makes the fantastic feel tangible through his attention to ground, buildings and bodies, turning a visionary episode into an elaborate landscape that rewards repeated exploration.
