Description
The Apocalyptic Woman is a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer from his Apocalypse cycle, depicting the woman and the dragon described in the Book of Revelation. The subject brings vulnerability, danger and divine protection into close relationship. Its fantastical adversary gives the sacred narrative an unsettling presence, making the encounter more than an ordinary human conflict.
The woman’s role is central to the scene’s meaning: she stands within a vision in which a threatened life becomes part of a struggle on a cosmic scale. Dürer turns that symbolic confrontation into a forceful graphic subject, connecting individual figures with the larger drama of the series. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates the associated example to 1511. The Apocalyptic Woman explores the tension between menace and protection within a densely imagined spiritual world.
