Description
The Arms of the Empire and of Nuremberg gathers heraldic shields beneath a richly decorated crown. Angels and winged figures attend the emblems, while swords, feathers and curling clouds create a dense frame around them. The symmetrical arrangement gives the image a formal character, but the varied gestures keep its ornamental surface lively.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut turns heraldry into a scene of presentation. The central eagle and surrounding shields remain clearly visible within the layered decoration, while the figures above add a sense of ceremony. The appeal comes from the meeting of precise symbols and imaginative detail, with authority expressed through an arrangement that rewards attention to every small line and ornament.
