Description
The Arts: Music by Alphonse Mucha gives musical inspiration a graceful human form. Created in 1898 as part of his four-panel Arts series, the design surrounds a flowing female figure with birds, curling stems and an ornamental circular backdrop. Pale fabric and warm accents move through a delicate network of curving lines.
Rather than depicting a conventional musical instrument, Mucha evokes music through the natural world and the rhythm of the composition. The long sweep of the drapery carries the eye down the panel, while the richly patterned upper section forms a decorative counterpoint. It is a lyrical example of the Art Nouveau relationship between figure, ornament and nature.
