Description

Spring (1896) by Alphonse Mucha gives the season a human presence: a fair-haired woman in a flowing white gown stands beneath a tree heavy with blossoms. Curving branches, long strands of hair and the folds of her dress weave through the narrow composition. Small birds and delicate flowers add to its gentle sense of awakening.

Created in 1896 for Mucha’s first Seasons series, this decorative panel was issued as a color lithograph by F. Champenois in Paris. Its original French title is Printemps. The design belongs to the Art Nouveau tradition, in which expressive outlines and plant forms turn an everyday subject into a richly patterned image. Mucha returned to the seasons in later series, making the 1896 date an important part of identifying this particular composition.

The enduring appeal of Spring (1896) by Alphonse Mucha comes from its balance of elegance and natural abundance. The upright format draws the eye from the flowering canopy down through the figure and trailing fabric. Soft greens, warm hair tones and pale blossoms give the work an inviting character for a reading corner, bedroom or interior that welcomes floral ornament and graceful lines.
