Description
The Ascension by Albrecht Dürer shows the disciples gathered beneath a cloud into which Christ disappears. The figures lift their faces and hands, their varied poses expressing wonder at an event unfolding above their reach. The lower edge of the rising figure appears near the top, connecting the earthly company with the open space overhead.
Made around 1510 for The Little Passion, this woodcut carries its story through upward attention rather than an elaborate heavenly scene. The densely gathered robes and bodies contrast with the lighter field above, giving the movement a clear direction. Dürer makes the episode feel collective and immediate, inviting the viewer to share the companions’ gaze while appreciating the individuality of their responses.
