Description
The Beast with Seven Heads and the Beast with Lamb’s Horns, from the Apocalypse series, is a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer dated 1497–98. The paired creatures named in the title belong to the visionary imagery of the Book of Revelation, placing the human world amid unsettling forms and supernatural powers.
Dürer brings heavenly figures, clustered people and fantastical creatures together in a densely layered composition. Radiating lines around the upper central figure contrast with the darker, crowded passages below; finely worked outlines and hatching give distinct forms to robes, clouds and beasts. The Beast with Seven Heads and the Beast with Lamb’s Horns belongs to Dürer’s Apocalypse cycle. The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the example associated with this catalog record.
