Description
M. Joret appears as a bold caricatural head with pointed features, a fanciful winged hat and an enormous dark bow at the collar. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec makes the clown’s named identity particular through the exaggerated arrangement. The ink drawing gives headwear and facial form a lively shared presence, allowing a performer to carry the encounter without an entire stage scene around him.
The 1885 drawing is made in pen and black ink, now faded toward brown. Its direct marks give the portrayal a material character distinct from the artist’s lithographs and posters. The work’s interest lies in a concentrated encounter with an individual, where the figure can remain engaging through drawing rather than the scale of a finished public announcement or an elaborate narrative of a complete performance.
