Description
Berthe Morisot’s The Cradle shows a seated woman watching a sleeping baby through a translucent veil. Her dark blue clothing contrasts with the pale bedding and softly lit curtain. One hand rests near her face, giving her attentive pose a quiet, inward character.
Painted in Paris in 1872, the image connects mother and child through a diagonal sweep of gauze. The baby is partly concealed, making the act of watching especially important. Morisot gives the domestic moment intimacy through restrained gesture and delicate layers of light.
