Description

Christ’s body stretches across the lower part of Nicolas Poussin’s The Entombment, drawing the surrounding mourners into a tightly connected group. One figure bends over him at the right, while a seated woman anchors the opposite side. Brown wash gathers the bodies into shadow, and finer pen strokes keep individual gestures legible. The movement of the living around the still body gives the drawing its restrained emotional force.

Made around 1656–57 in pen and brown ink, the drawing establishes its forms through changing emphasis of line rather than painted color. Poussin gives the subject room to develop through the marks themselves, allowing the viewer to follow how a composition can take shape on paper. The work offers an encounter with an episode whose gravity is conveyed by the arrangement of people. Its appeal rests in seeing human relationships become the structure of a devotional scene.
