Description
The Scourging of Christ surrounds the bound figure with tormentors and witnesses in a crowded architectural interior. Christ stands at a column while raised arms, weapons and turning bodies press around him. A dog occupies the foreground, and the heavy curtain and stonework lend the scene a formal setting in sharp contrast to its violence.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut makes the exposed body a clear center amid a restless assembly. Fine patterns distinguish armor from robes, while the crowd’s varied faces and gestures create an atmosphere of mounting pressure. The architecture holds these opposing forces within a tight space, making the scene’s emotional intensity come from proximity and the contrast between the prisoner’s vulnerability and the activity surrounding him.
