Description
In The Resurrection, Christ rises above the closed tomb, his cloak opening around him as he holds a banner. Below, soldiers occupy the ground in contrasting poses of sleep and alarm. Clouds and small heavenly figures surround the radiant upper part of the scene, separating the ascending body from the heavy stone and armed men beneath.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut builds the Resurrection through a strong opposition between upward movement and earthly weight. The lifted figure and billowing fabric draw the eye away from the tomb, while the guards remain tangled in their equipment and interrupted rest. Fine lines give texture to armor, cloth and clouds. The composition makes transformation visible through bodies responding differently to the same extraordinary event.
