Description

A horse carries an injured person near the center of Rembrandt’s Good Samaritan, with an inn, steps and attendants at the left and a dog low at the right. Arched buildings give the episode a tangible setting. The parable’s act of assistance becomes a practical gathering of people and animals, allowing care to acquire human presence within an ordinary inhabited place.

Made in 1633, the print combines etching, engraving and drypoint. This impression belongs to a later state of the same design, a distinction within its printed history rather than a different biblical episode. Rembrandt concentrates the subject’s interest on the people involved in giving and receiving help. The image makes compassion tangible through an encounter, allowing one represented moment to carry the larger story’s resonance while remaining grounded in particular bodies and circumstances.
