Description
The Hat Pinned with Flowers brings an adult and a child into a compact, closely observed grouping. A woman turns in profile at the right beneath a hat decorated with pale flowers, while the child’s face appears lower at the left. Soft brown and cream tones keep the two figures connected, and the hat gives the image a lively upper contour without overwhelming their faces.
Auguste Renoir made the color lithograph in 1898. Its lightly handled surface allows portraiture and a small domestic moment to coexist, with the flowers adding an ornamental accent to the intimate arrangement. The contrast between the taller figure and the child creates a gentle change in scale, while the soft transitions of the print keep their relationship more important than a detailed account of the surrounding space.
