Description
Sea and Cliffs by Auguste Renoir brings the meeting of land and water into a luminous coastal scene. The contrast between the shore’s solid forms and the open sea gives the landscape both structure and a sense of air and distance.
Painted around 1885 in oil on canvas, the work invites attention to the rhythms of the coastline and Renoir’s handling of color. Its subject offers a quieter counterpart to the figure paintings for which he is widely known.
