Description

The Holy Family in an Enclosed Garden by Albrecht Dürer brings a devotional subject into a sheltered outdoor setting. Lightly drawn outlines and parallel hatching suggest form, shade and the intimacy of the family group without weighing down the scene.

Created in 1512 with pen and reddish-brown ink, the drawing draws on the tradition of the Virgin in a garden. The enclosing arbor evokes the hortus conclusus, a garden image associated with Mary in Christian art.
