The Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth, Saint John, and a Dove

Description

The Holy Family with Saint Elizabeth, Saint John, and a Dove by Peter Paul Rubens draws its figures into a close circle around the children and a fluttering bird. Mary’s red dress forms the center of the scene, balanced by deep blue fabric and the warm brown garments of the surrounding adults.

Bright curls, small reaching hands and the dove’s spread wings bring lively movement to the intimate gathering. Richly patterned textiles below the figures add another layer of detail to this warm devotional image.
