Description

In The Horse Abductor, Francisco Goya makes a powerful horse seize a woman by her dress. The animal rises on its hind legs while the woman throws out her arms in resistance. A low viewpoint magnifies the horse’s body, and strange dark creatures appear farther behind. The open ground offers neither help nor a stable explanation for the violent encounter.

Created around 1815–1819 for the Disparates and published in 1864, this print transforms animal energy into an unsettling fantasy of force and abduction. Goya’s pale figure of the woman contrasts with the horse’s mass and the clouded darkness overhead. Although the scene has prompted legendary and allegorical readings, the image does not settle into an orderly story. Its power comes from the immediate imbalance between vulnerable human body and overwhelming creature.
