Description
Nude figures gather in a wooded setting in Paul Cézanne’s The Large Bathers. A large central body leans forward, contrasting with a standing figure at the right and a reclining one lower left. The group leads toward a river and landscape beyond, giving the broad composition a rhythm that connects the different poses with the space surrounding them.
This work is a color lithograph made around 1898, not one of Cézanne’s oil paintings of bathers. Printed marks and color give the subject a different material character, allowing the familiar theme to be explored through a distinct process. The impression belongs to the first of two states. The scene invites attention to how a grouped design can remain engaging through its internal relationships, making the balance between figures an active part of looking.
