Description
Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper centers on Christ seated at a long table with the twelve apostles. Their varied gestures and expressions carry a wave of reaction across the room, while Christ remains still at the center. The walls, ceiling, and distant windows create a carefully ordered perspective that draws attention toward him.
Created in the late 1490s for the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, the mural gives a sacred event a powerful human immediacy. Groups of figures turn, question, and respond to one another, creating movement within the balanced design. Leonardo’s attention to emotion makes the gathering compelling at both the individual and collective level.
