Description
The Little Horse stands in profile beneath a large masonry arch, its raised foreleg giving the otherwise still pose a hint of movement. An armored attendant appears behind it with a long weapon, while the horse’s bright body stands out against the deeper shadows of the surrounding stone. The animal becomes the clear center of a compact, carefully constructed space.
Dated 1505, Albrecht Dürer’s engraving joins an attentive study of the horse with a strong sense of architectural enclosure. Fine lines model the rounded muscles, mane and tail, while darker hatching gives the arch depth. The contrast between living form and ruined masonry lends the scene a quiet dignity, inviting attention to the animal’s balanced proportions and poised presence.
