About The Magpie
Claude Monet’s The Magpie (1868–1869) turns a snow-covered landscape into a study of winter light. A small black bird rests on a wooden gate, providing a quiet focal point among pale walls, snowy roofs and bare trees. Long blue-violet shadows stretch across the foreground, giving the snow a rich range of colors. Painted near Étretat, the scene finds its drama in sunlight and subtle contrasts rather than busy activity. The original oil painting belongs to the Musée d’Orsay in Paris.
