Description
In The Man of Sorrows Mocked by a Soldier, Christ sits with his head resting against one hand, his crown of thorns making the still pose a picture of suffering. A soldier kneels before him and offers a reed in mocking homage. A whip lies nearby, while the open space around the figures allows their unequal encounter to stand out with unusual clarity.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut brings the Passion into a concentrated exchange between two bodies. The soldier’s active gesture meets Christ’s withdrawn, exhausted posture, making humiliation visible without a crowded narrative setting. The folds of cloth and the careful articulation of hands sustain the emotional contrast. As an introduction to the Passion, the image asks the viewer to consider endurance before following the events of the larger story.
