Description

Middle Section of the Central Portal transforms an architectural threshold into a world of fantastic ornament. Paired sirens decorate imposing columns, while sleeping soldiers occupy the lower corners and an open passage draws the eye into the distance.

Created for The Arch of Honor of Emperor Maximilian I, the woodcut combines monumental structure with playful detail. Albrecht Dürer designed the right half, and Hans Springinklee or Wolf Traut supplied the left after Dürer.
