Description
The Nativity by Albrecht Dürer places a small sacred gathering within the impressive remains of an old building. Broken roofs, masonry and timber frame the scene, while the figures occupy a sheltered space near the base. The architecture draws the eye upward and into the distance, making the birth feel quietly nested within a much larger world.
Engraved in 1504, the work is especially engaging for its contrast of intimate subject and expansive setting. Dürer gives the weathered surfaces a remarkable clarity, allowing openings, shadows and plants to distinguish the different parts of the structure. The small group gains emotional force through that surrounding scale: a humble beginning becomes the still center of an elaborate, carefully observed place.
