Description
The Nativity shows Mary kneeling beside the infant within a shelter of timber and masonry, bringing the sacred encounter close through her attentive posture. Joseph and the surrounding details give the setting the character of an inhabited place. An ornamental border sets this Nativity apart as a framed devotional image, enclosing the tenderness of the scene within a more formal presentation.
This woodcut is a copy after Albrecht Dürer, and its relationship to the earlier design remains part of its identity. Firm contours distinguish the structure of the shelter from the folds of the figures’ clothing, while the child’s small presence gathers their attention. The contrast between a humble interior and the decorated outer frame gives the image a particular rhythm. Its appeal lies in that meeting of intimacy and ceremony, making a familiar story feel both personal and carefully presented.
