Description
The Witch by Albrecht Dürer combines a startling airborne figure with a small world of restless activity below. An older nude woman rides backward on a horned goat, her hair streaming outward as she carries a long staff. Beneath the rider, winged children occupy the ground, their gestures and objects adding a playful but unsettling counterpoint.
Made around 1500, this engraving brings the fantastic close to the viewer through precise descriptions of bodies, hair and fur. The direction of the rider contrasts with the animal’s movement, giving the composition a deliberately disorienting energy. Dürer balances the commanding upper figure with the busy group below, creating an image whose strange humor and disturbing force remain inseparable.
