Description
Paul Signac’s The Pine Tree at St Tropez spreads a broad canopy across a luminous coastal landscape. The orange trunk divides into sweeping branches, while touches of blue, violet, green, and yellow form the foliage. Beyond the tree, the distant landscape and sky appear in a fine mosaic of color.
Painted in 1909, the work shows Signac using separate colored touches to build both form and light. The tree has a strong, almost decorative outline, yet its surface remains lively with contrasting hues. Warm and cool colors meet throughout the scene, giving the Mediterranean setting an expansive brightness.
