Description
Women at the Well by Paul Signac sets two women and their water jars beside a sunlit Mediterranean harbor. One bends toward a vessel while the other handles the well’s rope, whose high loop draws a graceful curve against the sky. Blue water, golden ground and richly colored skirts divide the upright composition into broad, luminous areas. Signac painted the work in 1892; it is also known as Femmes au puits, Opus 238.
Small, distinct touches of color give even the shadows a lively surface. Seen together, these marks create a scene that feels carefully ordered yet full of light. The women form a balanced foreground group, while boats, distant land and a figure on the rising path open the space behind them. Everyday work becomes part of a composed vision of life beside the sea.
