About The Pont de l’Europe, Gare Saint-Lazare
Claude Monet’s The Pont de l’Europe, Gare Saint-Lazare (1877) finds a changing atmosphere among the ironwork and trains of a Paris railway station. Pale steam drifts across dark engines and tracks, partly obscuring the bridge and the buildings beyond. The strong diagonal of the structure contrasts with the loose clouds of vapor, giving the scene both weight and movement. One of Monet’s railway views of 1877, it treats modern industry as a subject for light and color. The original belongs to the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris.
