Description
Ichikawa Monnosuke II portrays Karigane Bunshichi, standing in a bold black-striped long robe before a red interior lattice. His hands gather around an object at the waist, giving the upright figure a concentrated gesture within the strong pattern of his clothing. Katsukawa Shunshō brings a named actor and role together, allowing the costume and setting to make the particular portrayal visually distinct.
The 1782 color woodblock print uses ink and color on paper. It preserves the actor’s portrayal in a lasting form outside the duration of performance, where performer and character can be considered together. The work allows their named relationship to carry the encounter without requiring an invented scene, a speculative action or a detailed account of a plot that the available record does not securely supply.
