Description

Nakamura Jūzō II portrays a samurai carrying an umbrella on a pole, a practical object that makes his presentation distinctive. The umbrella becomes part of the figure’s silhouette and helps give the role a particular character. Katsukawa Shunshō keeps the named performer within this encounter, inviting attention to how costume and carried objects can make a theatrical identity recognizable.

Katsukawa Shunshō’s color woodblock print is dated to 1773 or 1774, within the Edo period. Its ink-and-color medium turns an ephemeral performance into an image that can be considered at leisure. Rather than supplying a complete drama, the work concentrates on the relationship between actor and role, inviting the viewer to regard theatrical representation as a distinctive kind of human portrait.
