Description
In The Sheaf Binder, a worker bends low, his arms gathered across the straw near the front of the image. Fields and haystacks lie behind him, connecting the close task with the wider harvest setting. The woodcut after Millet gives the figure’s compact posture a practical meaning, allowing the body and material to become one closely arranged subject.
Dated 1853, the print is a woodcut on chine collé, engraved by Jacques-Adrien Lavieille after Jean-François Millet. The distinction retains the designer’s identity while crediting the execution of the block separately. The work gives an ordinary harvest activity a complete graphic field, making the relation between person and material its lasting subject. Its interest lies in the way a task can organize the figure’s presence, allowing rural labor to be encountered through a specific action rather than a generalized pastoral ideal.
