Description

In Man with a Spade, a lightly drawn man stands with the shaft of the tool crossing his body diagonally. A fragmentary figure study appears at the right, keeping the sheet’s character as a drawing visible beside the principal worker. Millet makes body and implement a close arrangement, with the tool giving direction to a figure established through relatively economical marks.

Made about 1855–1858 in Conté crayon on laid paper, the drawing belongs to a medium capable of both direct outlines and substantial dark passages. Millet gives a familiar laboring figure the attention of a sustained study, allowing the person and implement to share the composition’s focus. The subject does not need a named sitter or an invented biography to remain expressive. Its interest lies in making ordinary equipment part of how a human body is encountered in an image.
