Description
The Sudarium Displayed by an Angel by Albrecht Dürer gives a sacred cloth a dramatic place in the sky. A large winged angel holds its upper corners, presenting the image of Christ’s face amid billowing folds. Beneath the angel, a smaller gathering of winged figures appears among clouds, extending the composition into a second heavenly register.
Created in 1516, this etching uses a lively web of lines to distinguish feathers, fabric and cloud. The angel’s raised arms and broad wings create a strong outline, while the cloth becomes the central focus of devotion. The image brings together solemn presentation and airborne movement, making a familiar sacred subject feel expansive and intensely animated.
