Description
Self-portrait, Study of a Hand and a Pillow brings together Albrecht Dürer’s searching gaze and his close observation of everyday forms. Fine pen lines describe face, fingers and folded fabric with a mixture of precision and spontaneity.
The sheet dates to 1493, when Dürer was twenty-two. The head and hand relate to his painted self-portrait of that year; the reverse of the original sheet contains six further pillow studies, extending his exploration of light and folded surfaces.
