Description

Two richly dressed performers occupy adjoining panels in Katsukawa Shunshō’s portrait of Sawamura Sōjūrō III and Segawa Kikunojō III. Long robes, carefully arranged sleeves and contrasting headwear distinguish the figures, while the quiet architectural background gives their gestures room to register. The narrow upright formats bring each actor into focus without separating the pair completely; the composition holds their shared theatrical presence in a balanced arrangement.

Made around 1780, this color woodblock design connects the detail of costume with the expressive possibilities of a stage pose. Shunshō lets the patterned garments carry much of the picture’s movement, guiding attention from the faces to the sweeping hems. The appeal lies in the meeting of individual bearing and decorative rhythm, where two performers become both recognizable people and parts of a carefully organized image.
