Description
Segawa Kikunojō III portrays a woman in a low crouching or kneeling position, with long pale sleeves flowing around the figure. Vegetation below and a very dark upper background heighten the contrast between costume and surroundings. Katsukawa Shunshō makes the compact pose and extended fabric part of the theatrical encounter, keeping the actor’s identity distinct from the woman represented.
Katsukawa Shunshō’s 1778 color woodblock design is one sheet from a triptych. This individual panel belongs to that larger arrangement without needing to be mistaken for the complete three-part composition. Its ink-and-color surface carries the actor’s portrayal into a lasting image, inviting attention to the way a single position can hold a theatrical moment within a broader scene.
