Description

The Triumph of Mordecai is Rembrandt van Rijn’s treatment of an episode from the Book of Esther. Mordecai receives public honor after the king learns of his loyal service, while his enemy Haman is required to take part in that recognition. The subject turns a reversal of fortune into a scene of ceremony and human relationships.

The procession gives the narrative a public setting, contrasting the honor of its central figure with the motives and responses of those around him. The Triumph of Mordecai draws its meaning from more than celebration: pride, loyalty and unexpected justice meet within the same event. Rembrandt’s biblical subject invites attention to the human consequences of a dramatic change in status.
