Description

In The Urchin, Édouard Manet brings a boy forward against a spare background. His cap and dark jacket define a compact silhouette, while the turned face keeps the portrait from feeling rigidly frontal. The object near the lower left and the loosely described clothing suggest a figure encountered in ordinary life rather than one presented with formal grandeur.

The etching dates from 1861–62 and is printed in brown ink. Fine lines and concentrated darker marks distinguish the face, cap, and jacket, leaving the surrounding paper largely open. Manet’s interest rests in the boy’s presence: the economical setting allows the small changes of posture and expression to matter. The image gives its modest subject immediacy without requiring an elaborate story to explain him.
