Description

Two Poplars in the Alpilles near Saint-Rémy sets slender green and golden trees against a flowing blue-and-white sky. Pale mountain forms rise at the right, while a wavering path brings movement into the foreground. Vincent van Gogh gives the poplars a strong upward rhythm without separating them from their surroundings: tree, sky and ground are joined by strokes that bend, turn and repeat.

Vincent van Gogh painted the oil landscape in 1889 during his stay at Saint-Rémy. The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies its autumnal setting and emphasizes the intensity of its brushwork. The painting’s energy comes from the relationship between repeated strokes and larger forms: foliage, hills and sky each move differently, yet the two poplars provide a strong central rhythm that connects them.
